Like Nakahira's Crazed Fruit in Japan, the early concerns of the French New Wave are prefigured here: criminality and the male bond, the girl with a gun, the death pact. Hossein, a director of anxiety, nerve; it hurts that we can't be familiar with his work as Godard obviously was, dreaming of Marina Vlady, Bande à part, Pierrot le Fou. Recommended: Hossein's spaghetti western, Cemetery Without Crosses.
Pre-New Wave French Noir prison break picture doesn't let up on the tension for a moment. First, the tension of the prison break, a life-or-death necessity, then the sexual tension between the two escapees and their beautiful hostage. Great direction, great photography. 4.6 stars.
