Despite the one star rating, this film is FUCKING HILARIOUS! No, I really don't think it was intended as a dark comedy. Its blatant misogyny is something to marvel at, whoever said all Hollywood does is super liberal garbage needs to check out this baby. Von Trier usually gets mislabeled as a misogynist, those people have obviously not seen a Neil LaBute film.
Never have I been so torn between giving a movie one star or giving it five stars. If the film had ended with the arrival of a SWAT team helicopter airlifting Nick Cage to safety while he (still dressed as a bear) machine guns all the villagers...I think we'd be talking masterpiece.
I'm torn between rating this 1, or 5 stars. As a piece of cinema it is a disaster. As a piece of Cagesploitation it is a masterpiece. For what it's worth my girlfriend and I loved the bombastic lack of taste and outrageous acting. But no, it does not stand up to the brilliance of Robin Hardy's original.
Actually pretty good as an absurd dark-comedy. I don't think it was ever meant to be read as anything other than that, honestly, but it seems to have been misread by pretty much everyone as actually trying to be a serious horror film. The original 1973 film had lots of dark-comedy elements too. And of course Neil Labute would replace the original's religious overtones with gender politics. It's all very amusing.
