***1/2. I'd like to know what behaviourable sciences would conclude from Barbara Hale's attitude when her son wanted her to give him a big hug. Now, the screenplay is maybe poorly written but the mood of the film is perfect thanks to lighting and production design. This boy is clearly living in a spider's web. A RKO production to rediscover.
Some very nice lighting, sets and cutting. The exhausted tenement views from the eyes of a kid are certainly nightmarish. I love the young Ruth Roman, but wish she had a tattoo on her bi-cep, maybe some dice rolling snake eyes, or a hook, line and sinker. I believe Trump supporters consider these "the good old days."
I have not seen two characters more ill suited to being parents than Kennedy and Hale in QUITE some time. It's quite a well-paced, technically good little film, but JESUS, they were such horrifying, neglectful bastards. And it all seemed perfectly acceptable within its world? Ugh.
