Viennese surgeon Dr. Braun and his daughter Leni come to a small town in North Dakota as refugees from Hitler. When the winds of the Dust Bowl threaten the town, John Phillips leads the townsfolk in moving to greener pastures in Oregon.

This is a high-minded film, ringing in its denunciation of Nazism and its argument for social responsibility, but it is also richly atmospheric, as cinematographer John Alton works his magic with dust and rain and candles and low shafts of light cutting through the enormous prairie night.

Acting alongside John Wayne is the picture’s real star, Sigrid Gurie. Her character becomes the heart of the film, as she has to contend with doing what is best for her or doing what is right for the world around her. When love enters that complex equation the movie takes an unexpectedly tragic turn. Thankfully, the great John Alton is there to capture every tear’s sparkling glisten.

The cinematographer was John Alton, hence some superbly lit dust storms, both day and night. . . . It’s startling, to say the least, to see John Wayne playing a farmer with such left-wing sympathies.
