Larry Donner, a struggling author and writing professor, gives one of his pupils, Owen Lift advice on writing a murder mystery short story. But when Owen misunderstands Larry’s advice, he murders Larry’s snobbish and deceptive ex-wife Margaret, then wants Larry to kill his abusive mother in return.
