This is a nice time power gone wrong movie. Something in between the low budget paradox fatalist Time Crimes and the profit-mongering story film noir-ish Looper. There is an element that gets a bit old, the love triangle, but is used as part of the time paradox plot in a clever way. A lot done with a simple idea. There's a lot of time related movies in the last few years, not easy coming up with something original.
This is definitely one of my favorite genres. The problem is that they didn't even try to make the painter guy realistic. Even the tiniest bit of homework would have helped. They didn't even bother to get someone who could paint.
It's encouraging to see American directors tinkering with sci-fi tropes (time travel, multiple universes etc.) - in a Twilight Zone-sort of way. Another recent effort, Coherence also come to mind. Low budget, minimal settings, stylized acting, but at least the story is compelling and enjoyable.Bradley King has clearly seen Nacho Vigalondo's Time Crimes.
