it wasn't easy watching this film. i was drawn to it because of melvil poupaud and francois ozon's direction, but the story itself is very close to home. after watching this film, you might ask yourself: what would you do if you were in romain's shoes. the ending is what it should be. the sea is the best place to retire.
I really want to like Ozon's films. His stories are compelling, enticing. But they all feel like they're draped in style and cliche, leaving us with a mawkish, glossy, obnoxious facade of a film, goose-feathered sleeping bags lined with vinyl.
An intense performance by Melvil Poupaud is the driving force of this emotionally charged drama, with a great supporting cast that includes the legendary Jeanne Moreau. There's no proper way of dealing with such devastating situation, so I guess one must do whatever feels right to ease the pain. Romain and his boyfriend were so cute together. Beautiful but very understated, the cinematography was quite nice.
Maybe it does not bring much new to the genre, but it certainly feels very personal. Even if you do not agree with the character's action, they still feel very real. That's not to say that it's perfect. There are a few weak spot, but it is overall very haunting and human.
