An understated and assured gem that's not to be missed. Interestingly enough, the Hays Office turned down the script, but Leisen continued with production anyway. Good thing he did, because the preview cut struck a resonance with the censors and they passed it.
De Havilland really hit a great stride in the mid to late 40's, churning out career defining performances one after another. This, The Snake Pit, and The Heiress are enough to cement her legacy but she was in so many other great films. Truly one of the top 5 actresses of the classic era. This is a really moving and poignant story. Not very familiar with the director, but after seeing this will def seek out more. 4.5
