Eduardo Coutinho was filming a movie with the same name in the Northeast of Brazil, in 1964, when the military coup occurred. He had to interrupt the project, and came back to it in 1981, looking for the same places and people.
This film is not currently playing on MUBI but 30 other great films are. See what's now showing
If you want to know a piece of Brazil's history during the Military Dictatorship and how a film interrupted during this period can be made again 20 years later this is for you. Personally, I like it for its relevance & some minor importance in terms of Brazilian films but for the most part I found it an overrated work, tiresome, whose worst problem is capturing the sound of the people interviewed. So Hard to listen.
