FNC '15 One must have a great ability in suspending disbelief to take this French navel gazing tale about two losers in love with a beautiful young woman with a secret seriously. Garrel and co-writer Christophe Honore fail to make these characters believable or for that matter likable. When the entire plot could fall away with one character uttering one line, 'boys I have to get back to...', it really becomes silly.
I deeply, deeply enjoyed this but completely understand that people might want more than Golshifteh Farahani's face and french people ambling through Paris. Also, Louis and his dad deeply understand the uplifting power of a spontaneous beautiful dance scene and in this one we get two!
A generally poor effort featuring the sort of characters who never seem real. Within five minutes the film has already descended into inane melodrama. (And don't miss a dance sequence that is stolen nearly verbatim from Leos Carax!) The one bright spot is an impressionistic scene set in a church, but it lasts for all of two minutes, and after that we're back to the same tired genre clichés.
Watched this a while ago at the Lisbon & Estoril Film Festival with Louis Garrel introduction - I remember enjoying a few scenes of the movie, although in the end the characters felt a little flat and not very empathic or believable. Overall, I remember thinking it was an ok overture for Garrel as a director but not quite as good as I expected at first.
