The banker Géraudy, responsible for a financial scandal, flees into the mountains, guided by the young smuggler Manu. His wife refuses to join him. He hangs himself. Mrs. Géraudy, eager to get the insurance, forces her friend, Police Inspector Nansen, to make it look like an accident.
