Up Pompeii

Directed by Bob Kellett
United Kingdom, 1971
Comedy

Synopsis

Roman slave Lurkio inadvertently becomes the possessor of a scroll naming the proposed assassins of the Emperor Nero. Administering to the participants of his master’s orgy guests seems small compared to the trouble the scroll brings – but all are in for a nasty shock from Mount Vesuvius…

What are people saying?

  • Richmond Hill's rating of the film Up Pompeii

A surprisingly post-modern structure of broken fourth-walls and deconstructionism is found in this otherwise typically ribald comedy drawing its inspiration as much from a British Hogarthian music hall tradition as Plautus or Petronius (ah, those cod-Roman names here: Hernia, Nausia, Erotica et al!) Entirely a vehicle for Howerd’s wonderfully ramshackle delivery it remains a joyously groan-worthy play on words.
