Certainly not the garbage the trailer made it seem like but 'Venom' still seems like a missed opportunity with its' lack of extreme violence and narrative....should we say venom? Hardy mostly sleepwalks through this while the supporting players hit their marks and not much more. A script? Well, maybe just look at the mostly cool effects. The tag on scene has one of the worst wigs ever committed to screen.
This is a solid piece of comic book entertainment. Tom Hardy proves that he can pull anything off with this unique anti-hero. Fleischer keeps a solid balance of humor and action in what feels like a comic book film noir. This is also on a level with Sam Raimi's first two Spider-Man films.
There’s something great in here, but the studio got scared at the prospect of an unhinged R-rated film. There’s ADR all over the place which serves no purpose except for patching holes, probably scenes that were cut out. Maybe because of that, Venom is one of the most interesting and flawed studio films in recent memory. I almost wished it just said "fuck it" and went completely off the rails.
Venom works best with the comic edge that Fleischer was so proficient with in 'Zombieland'. Tonally, the film never finds its voice, despite best efforts from Riz Ahmed and Tom Hardy with the material. The comic book is so rich with concepts to explore, but those at fault are behind the camera instead of in front of it.
Sort of an interesting look at an alternative reality where Iron Man and the Dark Knight (the 2008 harbingers of superhero infatuation) didn't exist. A lot of it plays like early 2000s superhero flicks and Fleischer certainly takes cues from Raimi's Spiderman films (his previous horror-comedy Zombieland also owes much to Raimi's Evil Dead films) (cont.)
I'm being generous with 3. The symbiote looked glorious in certain scenes in 3D though. This reminded me of the early generally sterile vibe of the early 2000s Marvel movies like Ghost Rider or Daredevil.
It was bad for most of the time. When they decided not to go for the R rating and Hardy affirmed that almost 40 mins were cut out, we should have expected this.
While Hardy achieved 100% sync with the symbiote, the rest of the people involved in this haven't accomplished this, especially the director.
The plot is bad, the villain sucks.
6/10. Hopefully the fans will support this movie and a 2nd movie will be better.
