Venom Directed by Ruben Fleischer
A tent pole curio [Venom] and an all-time masterpiece [Mon oncle] both featuring wayward outcasts with bodies that won’t cooperate. Their mere existence threatens the hype and spaces of new technologies. Physical disruption equals inspiration, and in each outburst of movement the echoes of vaudevillian performance can be seen.

This is a paradox: Venom isn’t good—nor so-bad-it’s-good—and yet if there had been more of it, and if that more had been a little wilder or gorier, it probably would have been better.

Ultimately, the ingratiating eccentricities of “Venom” aren’t enough to really distinguish the movie from its superhero-movie brethren as it devolves into the usual expensive orgy of sound, fury and wisecracking.

  • HKFanatic's rating of the film Venom

In 2018, "Venom's" biggest strength is that it doesn't feel like a superhero movie. In fact, I'm not sure what kind of movie it feels like. While "Venom" is far too much of a misfit for me to outright hate it, if your inner 13 year-old boy is truly craving a 90's comic book anti-hero, I would point you in the direction of the "Spawn" adaptations, live-action or animated, which offer a far more intriguing mythos.

  • Gia de Almeida's rating of the film Venom

Tom Hardy is a powerhouse of an actor and carries the film brilliantly throughout. Some developments are severely lacking like Venom's decision to save the human race but the interaction between Venom and Eddie is INCREDIBLE (once again thanks to Hardy's bipolar-ly amazing performance). It's fun and superior to many (most?) superhero flicks that have come out in recent years. I'll definitely be watching the sequel.

  • Ghostman's rating of the film Venom

Venom is a movie with a lot of flaws and problems. The first twenty minutes are uniformly terrible. The film was cut of over half an hour of footage from its director's cut. Some characters seem to be existing in their own little movie. And the film's story seems to consist of a beginning and an ending but no real defined middle. [cont.]

  • HenriqueA's rating of the film Venom

2.5 - It was fun. Pretty fucking stupid, but nonetheless fun. And I guess that is much more then what I was anticipating. Fleischer is a mediocre director (at best) and loves himself some mediocre visuals (that's some spetacularly stock-footage-y production design and costumes), but you know what, for someone like me who doesn't give a fuck about the character, the humor really worked wonders. More weirdness, please.

  • msmichel's rating of the film Venom

Certainly not the garbage the trailer made it seem like but 'Venom' still seems like a missed opportunity with its' lack of extreme violence and narrative....should we say venom? Hardy mostly sleepwalks through this while the supporting players hit their marks and not much more. A script? Well, maybe just look at the mostly cool effects. The tag on scene has one of the worst wigs ever committed to screen.

  • Ethan's rating of the film Venom

This is a solid piece of comic book entertainment. Tom Hardy proves that he can pull anything off with this unique anti-hero. Fleischer keeps a solid balance of humor and action in what feels like a comic book film noir. This is also on a level with Sam Raimi's first two Spider-Man films.

  • Filipe F. Coutinho's rating of the film Venom

There’s something great in here, but the studio got scared at the prospect of an unhinged R-rated film. There’s ADR all over the place which serves no purpose except for patching holes, probably scenes that were cut out. Maybe because of that, Venom is one of the most interesting and flawed studio films in recent memory. I almost wished it just said "fuck it" and went completely off the rails.

  • Andhika Eka Buana's rating of the film Venom

VENOM, as expected, is not a complete disaster. Tom Hardy is having so much fun with the materials that to let this stop right here without a sequel would be a travesty.
