Weak Chabrol. An interesting character examination with no space to breathe. The formal approach to Hitchcock is too reverential & not nearly as creative as it could be (and it is, in some of Chabrol's accomplished films).
Why did this film make me think of Fassbinder ? It is a classic bourgeois-perverse-ill-at-ease Chabrol but the cinematography and the costumes make it a Fassbinder-like film. Or is it the very young Isabelle Huppert, who could have well been a Fassbinderian actress, the way she transforms here, from a young adolescent to a strange almost vampire lady. Fascinating as always.
