Ishikawa, a newspaper journalist, unexpectedly meets Asako, a woman who used to work for his company some time ago as a phone operator. Three years ago, she accidentally heard the voice of a suspect who committed a still-unresolved homicide.

Suzuki, as always it seems, elevated even his average material into something inviting, visceral, and exciting. It is just this elevation of the average that calls attention, here, to Suzuki's strong female characters. There's also a nightmare scene, a metaphor for murder, that is a standout among other films Suzuki had his mits on.
