Abu Shadi’s daughter is getting married and he has to live alone until his son – an architect that lives in Rome for many years now – arrives to help him with the wedding preparation. As the local Palestinian tradition requires, they have to hand-deliver the invitation to each guest personally.

Ms. Jacir is a thrifty filmmaker; there’s nothing frilly in this movie. But she is also a sensitive and imaginative and resourceful one. The film’s final scene, a lyrical sunset that ends with a nearly four-minute unbroken shot in which the father and son converse with amity and resolution, is a fine testimony to the director’s powers.

Jacir’s script neatly unpeels the layers over the course of the movie, and interleaves the simmering tension with moments of terrific comedy – for example, when the family realises the wedding invitations have the wrong day.
