Sublime brilliance from Aardman Animations in which genius creations Wallace & Gromit are plunged into a hilarious tale of skullduggery and derring-do involving a mechanical pair of trousers and a villainous lodger penguin. Our modelling clay heroes are unwitting accomplices in a dastardly plot to steal a diamond from the local museum.. Easily my favourite Wallace & Gromit short film and quite possibly a masterpiece.
The best of the first three Wallace & Gromit shorts. It is endearing, funny and clever. While the first short suffered from not having a "real" problem; and the antagonist from the third was not interesting, this one gives us Feathers McGruff, an intriguing and cold blooded penguin that makes a worthy adversary to Gromit. An exhilarating chase scene and superb stop motion animation makes this one wonderful.
The streamlined narrative construction around the film's only three characters is impeccable, and the soundness of its structure makes its impact so pure and immediate. Yet within these simple narrative beats a bustling creative energy emerges. In the end, that's the magic of Wallace and Gromit: the pitch-perfect tone somewhere between whimsy, adventure and a heart-warming soul.
