The thirteen-year-old seventh graders Bobo, with an attitude and Lennon specs, and Klara, sporting a mohawk, form a garage band even though they can’t play an instrument. So they recruit the shy devout Christian, Hedvig, join them because she plays classical music on the guitar.

So sweet! One particularly great moment comes when Hedvig, the band’s “Jesus Kid”-turned-punk in training, gets to finally use an electric guitar after only having used an acoustic. The two grown men operating the youth center where the girls practice are all, “we’ll teach you the chords, this is how you play” until Hedvig jumps right into a perfect rendition of KSMB’s “Six Zero Three" as the bros look on, dumbstruck
At last we have a happy and hopeful and less preachy Moodysson back, And with it he produces his best film in 13 years. Great performances from the leads and supporting cast especially Klara's father and the Club workers. It's his most joyous upbeat film and you can't help but fall in love with it. "Hate The Sport" ends up in your head and Mira Grosin as Klara goes down as one of Moodysson's best child peformances.
While the characters are likeable enough WATB feels curiously whitewashed and very much like a kids film that's filled with swearing. There are genuine moments of reflection on family and belonging but ultimately just not enough grit to win an adult audience and certainly nothing that any kids who grew up as punks would really respond too. Perhaps it's the lack of any sense of self-destruction. 2 stars
Moodyson returns to interesting scripts, effectively mixing the harshness of punk with the sweetness of these three little friends. Full Review: http://alwayswatchgoodmovies.blogspot.pt/2014/03/we-are-best-2013.html
Moodysson revisits the world of youth with this 1982 set film about three young girls starting their own punk band. Universal in some regards with its subjects' feelings and experiences yet feels hollow like a young adult film versus something that can connect with a broad audience. It captures the awkwardness and rebellion of youth somewhat but not in a deep or moving way. Disappointing considering the hype.
