The residents of a British village during WWII welcome a platoon of soldiers who are to be billeted with them. The trusting residents then discover that the soldiers are Germans who proceed to hold the village captive.

A surprisingly hard-edged propaganda drama which reveals a rather steely determination under the rosy cheeked village veneer. The fact that most of the heroic protagonists are female and/or middle-aged - very home front - is a great appeal and only makes the small schisms of violence all the more believable in the pursuit of self and homeland preservation. A small gem.
Mubi says that this film expresses avant garde, I do not see that. I do say this film is filled with drama, twist and turns, and filled with heroism. All in all not a bad movie I would watch again, definitely deserving of four stars.
Man this was boring as hell. Only British People would serve tea during a fight. This is supposed to be a war movie but half the time its just old women and young children talking smack about the jerrys only to not do anything. This was trash.
Very forgettable WW2 film. Already forgotten the plot and just watched it 3 months ago. Not a good sign. Need to see more of Cavalcanti's work to make a better opinion, but for now, seems to be a by the numbers guy with little to offer creatively. 2 stars
An unexpected wartime masterpiece. I came into this thinking of the Ealing Studios of pleasant Alec Guinness comedies and came away awed by the film's bluntness, unabashed use of violence on both sides and desperation to survive the Nazis as terrorists. What starts as a simple tale of Germans posing at Brits to run maneuvers in a sleepy seaside town turns to horror, as kids are rounded up to be shot and blood flows.
This is a interesting historical movie with very little emphasis on war. It focuses more on the residence of the town rather then what is happening around them, which can mess up the pacing sometimes. I did enjoy how it took its time but the long scenes of dialogue without action or narrative beats got boring sometimes. It seemed very accurate to the time mostly likely because it was made during WW2.
