Even better than Solange, it's debatable if it's actual Giallo or not. There is no debating that the cinematography, the characterizations seemed to be bit fleshed out more, plus the Cipriani score is just beyond elegant. There are plot developments that are just plain silly, but it just comes with territory.
In my opinion, more a thriller than a pure giallo. The usual knife becomes a meat mincer, car chases last an eternity and both Mario Adorf and Farley Granger, who are the only reason to see this film, don't spend more than 15 minutes on the screen. I understand the reason why. Already forgotten.
A poliziotteschi horrified into a giallo-nightmare; the film embodies a shocking world, barely standing on its feets, almost throwing up - yet maintaining an elegance all of its own (did De Palma see this?), trying to be cool in a trembling universe. Italian genre cinema at its mannerist-expressionistic best!
Massimo Dallamano is one of great Italian specialists in 60s /70s cinema bis (from slasher to western, detective, mystery films) with Antonio bido, Pupi Avati, Sergio Martino… easy going investigation but then it goes into a more complex and thriller affair, tense, bloody manhunt. Not a classic but good quality film and well orchestrated one if you are a fan of the genre.
Like many Italian thrillers, The Police Asks for Help plods along rather casually. The film references a very real problem in Italy of the seventies yet, despite some excellent albeit protracted action scenes, it does little to fix its unengaging sequence of events. An anti-climax ending, revealing a conspiracy, also erodes any progression made by the film. Could have been (and should have been) better in all.
