What Scoundrels Men Are!

Gli uomini, che mascalzoni!

Directed by Mario Camerini
Italy, 1932
Comedy, Romance

The film was a great success, De Sica and Lia Franca became stars and the song Parlami d’amore Mariù was a hit. Rarelly in Italian film history, it was filmed on real Milan locations, nowadays it is a sort of documentary how was Milan in the 30s.

What are people saying?

  • Karl J. Kipling's rating of the film What Scoundrels Men Are!

The plot's the usual boy-meets-girl fluff, where there's always some humorous disaster keeping them apart. But aside from being an extremely likeable film with extremely likeable actors (De Sica, he's so young!), the style here has real poetry: lots of gliding cameras through streets and over waters, brilliant editing, the whole thing just flows so beautifully. It's one of the most luminous comedies of the 1930s.
