Even though I strongly believe that one day Emmerich will deliver a masterpiece, it certainly isn't White House Down. All his usual jazz seems in place, and yet the flick seems overwhelmed by Emmerich's own craft. Specially, the excessive amount of characters presented, which do not feel warranted by the size of the film's event; concentrated in one location of large in importance but of small catastrophic scale.
Some might find Emmerich one of the most altruistic film makers in Hollywood. Its clear he makes no big plans. He knows action, and while most action films become a messy plethora of cliches, Emmerich this time at least keeps us convinced of his game. Its tensely directed, while James Vandebilts script displays a sly and satirical edge. Its a skillful balancing act of the absurd and the rousing.
