Ridiculous back stories aside this is a great 90's movie (complete with overly schematic class conflict) mostly because the actors create nuanced characters in spite of these stereotypical situations. Sarandon and Spader 's faces are truly fascinating to watch and not just in the love scenes. I doubt fifty shades of grey will be worth revisiting 30 years from now.
