Jonas Mekas’ short about the old community he once lived in. Shot in 1950 upon arriving in America Mekas did not edit and present the footage until 2003 making this both his first and last film shot on 16mm.
This film is not currently playing on MUBI but 30 other great films are. See what’s now showing
A fascinating look at one of Brooklyn's most vibrant neighborhoods, one that has gone through more than one radical change over the last 60 years. We see it in 1950, the first footage Mekas shot when he came to America, and again in the 1970's. I lived in Williamsburg before it was gentrified, when the streetlife included wonderfully colorful prostitutes & heroin dealers. I loved the neighborhood then and I still do.
ฯ looking everywhere, i see, nothing but people ฯ (blonde redhead) Mekas' first film shot after emigrating, this is purely a slice of life short, but a good one...having been tipped off to Mekas' work by one of the people i follow on MUBI, I'm digging what i see so far...like the choice of b&w and silence here, as it forces the images front and center...
