Really neat. The characters, their dialogue, and the dusty settings all feel lifted from a classic western, or even a Steinbeck novel. The camera work is still, with plenty of low and wide angles that playfully pay homage to westerns and the like. The palette is limited, but the colours still manage to be beautiful. The music was also lovely - a selection of classic country. All in all, not perfect - but damn good.
Interesting approach to a sci-fi western. It's definitely got a lot of style; it's all an interesting mix, though I feel the overall feel and look is too polished for the grittiness of the story. The music made me especially anxious since it is unique and anachronistic at times to the genre.
People rate movies too seriously sometimes that they forget it's suppose to be enjoyable. "Young Ones" is a science fiction drama that doesn't want to promise too much. It's a story about family, society and survival. The film was successful to show a very cruel setting of a dry and harsh land. Kodi Smit-McPhee showcases his acting prowess despite being new and young, while Michael Shannon lives up to expectations.
You'd be foolish to view this as Sci-Fi. What you have here is an updated version of melodramas shot in depression era America. Akin in quality to say Ruby In The Dust, Young Ones is beautifully conceived and shot with nice character depth and fantastic costumes. A simple tale of revenge and retribution - as always Michael Shannon is captivating and fatherly but it is Kodi Smit-McPhee who steals the show. Enjoyable.
This project was left too high concept without being satisfyingly fleshed out. The performances are good but most of the motivations and story drivers are generic. There's a bit of nice world design, but only in bits and pieces rather than as a cohesive whole. Overall; promising but only sporadically satisfying.
Paltrow is a like a bland rich kid at school who sees the smart children's projects at the science fair and wants copy them all at once, making something beautiful but soulless and useless. Shannon and Fanning are the two great actors wasted by the script, while Holt and Mcphee give their best though their best is not nearly enough.
Un western post-apocalíptico que inicia con mucha trama contextual, sobre el agua extinta, la guerra y la tensión interna, y las tácticas perversas que los personajes se ingenian para hacerse lo suyo. Es la parte aburrida. En paralelo se va construyendo algo casi imperceptible. Sobre los lazos de padre e hijo. Esto, ya condensado para el final, es lo mejor. Típico del western: la madurez y el rescate del honor.
Feels like a work in progress. World building is visually successful with subtle SF but it's not fully integrated in the narrative. Revenge drama has some interesting details but relationships between characters are not fleshed out enough for it to be compelling. But the main problem by far is the editing - it has so many unnecessary cross fades it's ridiculous.
