Bacurau Réalisé par Kleber Mendonça Filho, Juliano Dornelles
Altering the context of their sources, Filho and Dornelles demonstrate the remarkable power that remains in well-worn genre tropes when employed with force and intelligence.

It’s broader in scope and crazier in its ambitions [than Mendonca’s previous films]— an expansiveness signaled by the fact that Mendonça Filho shares writing and directing duties with his invaluable production designer, Juliano Dornelles.

An ingenious mashup of American westerns and the satirical and political work that swept Brazilian cinema in the 1960s, by the likes of Glauber Rocha and Nelson Pereira dos Santos.

  • Elijah T.'s rating of the film Bacurau

I really like it. This was some Most Dangerous Game shit with a hell of an ending. The whole game is an allegory of civilized people’s obsession with hunting wild animals for “sport”. I really like the portrayal of history here and enjoyed the racial matters it lays bare. I can only imagine someone watching this without knowing a thing. Kinda wish I didn’t even read the description beforehand. Digging the soundtrack.

  • João Martins's rating of the film Bacurau

A subtil colonização transnacional no séc. XXI e o espírito de comunidade e de pertença (em muitos sítios em extinção) é uma dictomia representada de forma perfeita.

  • Atzin Ortiz González's rating of the film Bacurau

This furious neo western, formally daring & with a playful mix of genres, completely captures the zeitgeist that society as a whole is experiencing with the living nightmare of failed governments and late capitalist interests. But nevertheless, it has a strong feeling for resistance and hope. A fascinating film in every way possible.

  • Rafael Zen's rating of the film Bacurau

Cangaço-futurism - what a way of presenting another great film. Mendonça Filho is proving Brazilian cinema to be alive and kicking - not only Bacurau is an arid trip through the veins of South America but also a beautifully conducted film through genre-making. Using our century's freshest debates on colonialism, social segregation and latino culture, this work keeps giving as days go by. Mad Max serving Mad America.

  • Diego Ravazzolo's rating of the film Bacurau

As a Brazilian I must say that Bacurau is a perfect analogy of our country. It's brilliant, not only because of its originality in terms of a wider perspective in what concerns Brazilian cinema of recent years, but also because of its subervesion of a white, neofascist and racist approach. Kleber goes Tarantinian in this violent, bloody and yet full of anti colonial historical references film. Bacurau resists!

  • Aaken's rating of the film Bacurau

A fresh wind of cinema coming from Brazil. This film is absolutely stunning and totally unique. Raw and cruel, filled with humour, blending genres and styles for a very personal approach in film making. Bravo!

  • Jason's rating of the film Bacurau

BACURAU is, like, instantaneously legendary. The last three people on earth will be discussing it around the fire. Them genre faves are referenced. USA(izized) critics are quick to aver that Bacurau's school, named for one João Carpinteiro, nods to John Carpenter. For sure. Plus, though: Alejo Carpentier? Themes specific to Latin America, but ... humanity in general ain't never had much aptitude for unfucking itself.
