LES GARDIENS DE LA GALAXIE 3

James Gunn États-Unis, 2023
The Guardians of the Galaxy movies have, for better or worse, always had a distinctive personality. What elevates Vol 3 is the way it keeps that personality, nodding to the irreverent swagger that is a crucial component of the Guardians USP while delivering a series of devastating emotional sucker punches along the way.

Guardians 3 may not be particularly original, but it’s also rarely cynical or opportunistic. At a time when comic-book fare has increasingly become the most wearying corner of the cinematic firmament, that is quite an accomplishment.

[Vol. 3] is a Marvel entry surprisingly free of any ties to broader property outside of the first two volumes, but mired in the same bag of tricks with a bit more slime on it... a space oddity pastiche that feels pre-approved and safely on brand; not the genuine, fascinating weirdness of an industry outsider.

[A] dour, visually off-putting two-and-a-half-hour A.S.P.C.A. nightmare of a film... this final piece of the trilogy makes one thing apparent: “Guardians” was just a one-hit wonder.

Watching [Vol. 3] often feels like snooping on a group holiday where the participants stopped enjoying one another’s company years ago, but are ploughing on for old time’s sake. Where the cast’s chemistry used to run on playful joshing and bickering, now every other group interaction is just sour, if not actively rancorous.

GOGV3 struggles to contain its own disorders within two-and-a-half groaning hours... Watching the thing is like trying to drink water from something more powerful than the proverbial fire hose. It’s like putting your head back to be waterbombed by the same service’s aerial forest-fire team.

An enjoyably eccentric, insouciantly funny and often beautiful-looking jumble of an entertainment that plays — at least when it isn’t let down by a wobbly seriocomic tone and some excessive narrative multitasking — like a sincerely moving farewell to some of the more likable rogues and motley misfits in the Marvel cosmos.

“Vol. 3” is the most confusing and least fun of the series, which had been notable for its lightness and sense of self-aware humor... It feels weird saying this, but the raccoon’s tale is the only moving part of this movie.

The film feels more like a digression than a finale, a journey into one character’s origin that then hastily, just before the credits roll, tries to manage a sense of broader completion... It’s an odd, lumbering patchwork of a film, occasionally fascinating but otherwise bloated and aimless.

So much of what we get in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 feels superfluous, phoned in and/or out of place... What was once an anything-goes sensibility now feels like it’s stuck in a nothing’s-sticking gear. Dark, wearisome and bombastic, along with an ensemble cast clearly radiating that they’d rather be someplace else, is not what we come to a Marvel movie for.

[Gunn] risks cheap sentimentality (if not full-blown bathos) by introducing likable new characters whose deaths will jerk tears a few scenes later — except he’s so darn good at it that audiences were audibly weeping when it happened at the film’s premiere... The story might not always make sense, but it keeps things moving.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. achieves what it sets out to do, which is provide a stirring and audience-pleasing finale for a franchise that has proven to be one of Marvel’s biggest and most unlikely success stories... The film’s wildly imaginative visuals are another plus, with the proceedings feeling so bizarrely trippy at times it’s as if Gunn is aiming to create a midnight cult classic rather than a blockbuster superhero film.
