It’s a commonplace enough setting for a family drama, anchored by brilliant performances by all three leads... But writer and director Azazel Jacobs unspools the family’s story little by little, exploring the absurd humor of deathbeds and the meaning of memory and grief with extraordinary love.

The film is at once bitingly funny and disarmingly honest about how siblings treat one another under pressure... Moving but never maudlin, His Three Daughters is a film packed with delicate moments and realistic conversations, bolstered by a uniformly excellent cast.

What makes His Three Daughters so special is how it approaches death, the various ways we grieve, as well as deal with the inevitable... It is a work of big emotions and heart in the middle of the worst time of a person’s life that is also one of the best films of the year.

His Three Daughters might suffer from performances that are too affected and theatrical, but Jacobs’ careful direction and clever writing lets each successive scene reveal information that upends any assumptions made in the prior.

Despite any dread a skim of the synopsis might provoke, the film is free of the mopey melodrama or Sundancey quirks that often make the dying-parent/estranged-sibling screen subgenre so dire. It’s wry, vivid and moving in unexpected ways.

Given His Three Daughters’ fidelity to the cold facts of dying, the final minutes makes a bold and uneasy logic leap that pulls on the heartstrings but feels too neat for a drama this lived in, for sibling bonds this spiky.
