HUNDREDS OF BEAVERS

Mike Cheslik États-Unis, 2022
The repetition that can make Beavers feel a bit tired simultaneously establishes one of its strengths; the movie delivers gags with a reliability you can set your watch to.

It's not perfect — the 108-minute runtime is frankly too long for something this non-stop loco, and it sags a little in the middle. But come the fabulous final reel... it’ll be hard to keep a smile off your face.

Decider
Hundreds of Beavers is kinda strange, kinda random, and often pretty funny... a fun feat of filmmaking that feels superficially like a lark but is also happily deeper than that.

The gag-a-second approach here is reminiscent of Airplane. It never quite reaches the heights of that peerless example of the joke avalanche approach—there are moments where the rhythm falters, and things can get a bit overwhelming—but this is a project to be applauded nevertheless.

This is richly imagined escapist entertainment, a fun machine that opens up rarely used neural pathways and gets you thinking about what cinema could be, in addition to all of the things it already is... It’s one for the ages: a dam fine movie.

Cinésthesia
[Hundreds of Beavers] is a goofy, readymade cult movie, sure, but Mike Cheslik's film also represents a valuable rediscovery of the art of the running joke... With its relentless, somewhat exhausting joke construction, the movie operates at an ultra-high frequency: it's something like an emission from the cinema of another planet.

The sheer sustained silliness of this spoof silent comedy is what finally compels admiration... At such a pitch of crazy inventiveness you can’t help but feel awe at this film’s absolute dedication to gag productivity.

As audiences turn away from cinema and toward gaming, Cheslik and Tews have met them halfway, making a collective experience out of the phenomenon of watching someone else game, a midnight movie for an era of YouTube playthroughs and Twitch livestreams.

Hundreds Of Beavers is that rare thing in the current film landscape: a genuine cult classic... It’s a lo-fi, original, refreshing treat with a gag count that leaves much more expensive fare in the dust.

Hundreds of Beavers is an immaculately constructed, gloriously bizarre, wholly unique tribute to that basest of comedy pleasures, made by people whose imagination seemingly knows no bounds.

The Wee Review
A lunatic stew of silent slapstick, Looney Tunes Cartoons, Guy Maddin eccentricity, and Crash Bandicoot, Hundreds of Beavers is an ultra-specific experience that is also one of the funniest movies in recent memory.

Hundreds of Beavers already has the makings of a future cult classic... By merging slapstick comedy with creative creature designs and an action-packed “man versus nature” premise, Cheslik has made a film that is nearly impossible to describe... It signifies a great new filmmaker on the rise who can use his limited resources to his advantage.
