INSOMNIE

Christopher Nolan États-Unis, 2002
This could this be The Big Sleep for a new generation... Nolan has made of it something pleasingly old-fashioned, yet viscerally and sensually modern, delivering an icy, sub-zero burn to the mind.

"Insomnia" is reminiscent of Hitchcock in the way Nolan ratchets up the suspense and in its exploration of the transference of guilt. Despite the omnipresent sunlight, as far as morality is concerned, the film is concerned with subtle, shifting shades of grey.

Unlike most remakes, the Nolan “Insomnia” is not a pale retread, but a re-examination of the material, like a new production of a good play.

The intensely sharp-witted remake of the noir thriller ''Insomnia'' -- a cat-and-mouse game in which the mouse feels its pursuer's breath on its fur and the cat is burdened with shame -- matches the director Christopher Nolan's particular interests. The film centers on the grim pursuit of a murderer amid gorgeous vistas pulsating with color.
