IRISH WISH

Janeen Damian États-Unis, 2024
Pretty much no theme-park Ireland cliche is left unturned in [Irish Wish, which] reimagines Irish Catholicism as a twinkly, impish delivery system for magical realist plot devices.

A determinedly mild addition to the Lindsay Lohan “what-if” universe.

[Irish Wish] is as frothy as the foam on a pint of Guinness, as formulaic as the last disposable Netflix rom-com. Yet [Lindsay Lohan and Ed Speleers] make you believe that they belong together, and not every romantic comedy does that.

The rom-com genre lives and dies on its tropes, because we love them and they’re comforting, but the lack of originality smarts here. “Irish Wish” might be more at home on the Hallmark Channel — where it would really stand out — but in the land of Netflix, it just doesn’t shine the way “Falling for Christmas” did.

As a fairy-tale romantic rendering of Ireland, Irish Wish is almost offensively bad; as another rung on the ladder for Lindsay Lohan romcom supremacy, it is almost, somehow, beyond reproach.

Cartoonishly colourful cinematography brings emerald-tinted sparkle to Killruddery House, Lough Tay, the Cliffs of Moher and other tourist traps. What else? It’s professionally assembled? Everyone has nice hair?

Despite the lovely chemistry between Speleers and Lohan, Irish Wish did not rattle my preconceived notions — if anything, it’s the worst version of my hated tropes. Speleers and Lohan deserve a movie worthy of their electric eye contact and charming banter.

While the structure and plotting doesn't innovate on the genre much at all, Lohan's mere presence makes the film work. She is an undeniable star and has always succeeded as a screwball comedienne, even when the material isn't the greatest.

No one is expecting Irish Wish to be an Oscar winner, but it’s successful as what it is... Sometimes you just want something uplifting, easygoing and surface-level, which this is (despite Maddie proclaiming James Joyce to be her favorite author).

A persuasive tourism ad masquerading as a real movie... Netflix has specialised in the kind of anodyne content that can be popped on in the background while some ironing is done... It’s what we expect from them at this stage but it’s not what we wish for Lohan, an actor back on the ladder who deserves to climb a lot higher than this.
