[Dead Reckoning] is a ridiculously good time... Some of the overcooked dialogue about the importance of this particular mission gets repetitive, but then McQuarrie and his team will reveal some stunningly conceived action sequence that makes all the spy-speak tolerable. Hollywood is currently questioning the very state of their industry. Leave it to Ethan Hunt to accept the mission.

[Dead Reckoning is] a breathless blast of an action-adventure summer blockbuster that consistently reinvigorates your belief in the power of such a thing. That it’s not quite superior to the absolute best entries speaks to how exceptional these movies really are.

This outrageously enjoyable spectacle has compelled my awestruck assent with its sheer stamina, scale and brio... The pure fun involved in this film, its silly-serious alchemy, and the way the franchise seems to strain at something crazily bigger with every film, as opposed to just winding down, is something to wonder at.

The explosive success of “Top Gun” might have stoked unreasonable expectations for Cruise’s follow-up, but like that film, this is big, muscular filmmaking with an almost throwback feel in terms of its refreshingly overt desire to entertain.

Despite the new faces, there are, unsurprisingly, no real surprises in “Dead Reckoning Part One,” which features a number of dependably showstopping stunts, hits every narrative beat hard and, shrewdly, has just enough winking humor to keep the whole thing from sagging into self-seriousness.

On its own terms, M:I-7 is a superbly-crafted action thriller. Once again, Cruise has outdone himself as Hollywood’s last great movie star, pushing himself beyond the limits of what any insurance liability should. Yet for this reviewer, it felt there was still something left to tighten, some more air to be pumped into the balloon, a little more fuse to let out.

Stupendously entertaining... Like last year’s Top Gun: Maverick, Dead Reckoning Part One feels like an attempt to save the blockbuster by blasting it back to first principles... And while it lacks Maverick’s flawlessly sleek finish and unexpected warm touch, it matches it for action that’s both stunningly executed and strikingly classical in its approach.

A heart-pounding, never dragging, mission accomplished... If other “Mission: Impossible” outings have sometimes felt that Hunt is, well, a little robotic, this time the filmmakers allow some humanity to peek through.

Like “Top Gun: Maverick” last year, “Dead Reckoning” might be just what we need right now: a two-hour-plus session of cinematic self-care, wherein the chases, fights, mayhem, exegetical speeches and jaw-dropping derring-do knit together to form a comforting weighted blanket of pure escapism and reassurance.

Dead Reckoning can, admittedly, feel a little too immaculate and calculated when held up against the more lofty, idea-driven blockbusters of our age (say, a Dune or an Across the Spider-Verse). But any simplicity here is outweighed by the sheer force of Cruise’s brand.

McQuarrie puts enough bloody crunch into the action to dispel any suggestions of creeping comic decadence. Top-flight supporting performances help.

Ludicrously entertaining and even more ludicrously titled, “Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One” doesn’t just rack up the miles in style. Like so many globe-trotting thrillers and big-screen tourist brochures, it’s also a gleaming advertisement for Hollywood itself, a celebration and a reminder of how profoundly the movies have shaped our views of the world.
