Tyler Perry does for Tiffany Haddish what Irving Thalberg did for the Marx Brothers: he gives her a vehicle for her prodigious comic talent, then weighs it down with unfunny supporting performers and an unnecessary melodramatic subplot.

Go figure — Tyler Perry’s most focused film to date still feels like assembly footage from someone else’s TV series. But that’s not always a bad thing, it turns out. Especially when you’ve got Tiffany Haddish running through your scenes, wild and profane and free.

If the movie’s looseness lets in an excess of dead air, “Nobody’s Fool” is still dotted with pleasures besides those Haddish brings. . . . This is the first Perry movie I’ve seen to eschew strident moralizing, and it is all the better for that.
