PALM SPRINGS

Max Barbakow États-Unis, 2020
Palm Springs looks and feels like TV, but it’s still swift and disciplined, getting excellent mileage out of the script’s witty relationship to conventions.

It’s a very interesting and thought-provoking experience. It often made me laugh out loud. The cast—Andy Samberg, Cristin Milioti, J.K. Simmons, Peter Gallagher, Meredith Hagner—is so talented, so in the zone with the material that they crackle with unexpected character development, absurdity, flaws, humor.

Sometimes it works; the movie is an easy watch. But Palm Springs also keeps getting in its own way, with a premise whose complications demand more explanation than anyone really wants from an Andy Samberg movie, and a romance that at times feels about as adult as a tenth grader.

The long, crazy middle of this wildly funny, admirably inventive movie is where the surprises are lurking.

The pitch for Palm Springs likely went: “Edge of Tomorrow meets Groundhog Day but with a cool Coachella rom-com vibe.” All of those components are present and accounted for in Max Barbakow’s film. The execution is confident, funny, and thoughtful.
