The monster also has the power to make his victims hallucinate before they disappear, which provides director Sylvain White with a perfect opportunity to display some visual imagination. Unfortunately White misses the opportunity—the movie is never very interesting to look at. It isn’t interesting to think about either, since White and screenwriter David Birke fail to imbue the story with any subtext.

The film bears the scars of a movie pulled apart in the editing room; not since Mr. Police struggled to find the clues strewn through the Scandinavian wasteland of The Snowman has a mainstream thriller felt this hastily assembled and incoherent.

As it happens, they’ve wound up concocting the most perfunctory horror picture I’ve seen in some time. It’s not even worth making a “thin gruel” joke about.
