The story has shaky logic but a rock-solid sense of instilling dread with a minimum of special effects and a sound design that turns the chill up to 11.

Talk to Me delivers its share of jump scares and creepy atmosphere... [Danny and Michael Philippou] know the online culture in which they’ve set their film, and it gives Talk to Me a strong sense of realism to balance the supernatural goings on.

Talk to Me is hardly a bad horror film, but the disconnect between what was and what could be looms large over the final act. I will give the Philippous this: few films end with as much confidence as Talk to Me. With the best bits up front and at the end, the movie is structured perfectly to make a lasting impact on horror fans.

Danny and Michael Philippou vault into features with assurance and imagination, cooking up gut-wrenching thrills that deftly tap into their own background as viral-video sensations... [Talk to Me] is thematically a bit thin but doesn’t stint on genuine scares, intensity or revulsion.

What's so refreshing [about Talk to Me] is how [the film] foregrounds the complexities of social interactions and identity construction without sacrificing the dopamine zing of adrenaline.

The metaphor here may be slightly heavy-handed (pun intended!) but as pure horror, [Talk to Me] respects the audience and delivers the goods, potentially setting the film up for an inevitable franchise. Like The Purge or Saw, there are unlimited possibilities.

Talk to Me consistently operates as a suggestive mood piece concerned with Mia’s struggles to maintain her tether to her world. Wilde gives a thoughtful, haunting performance, while the Philipous conjure a shadowy, gothic atmosphere that is, above all, startlingly melancholic.

The reason the film works so well is in its well-established teenage relationships - with the Philippous showing the attraction of being in with the cool kids and the dangers this presents... The teenage cast is uniformly excellent... [Talk to Me is] a dark little debut that doesn't soft pedal its ending.

“Talk to Me” is really part of a classic horror genre: the movies where kids play around with things they don’t really understand. And yet it feels just new enough to make me want to listen the next time they have something to say.

[Talk to Me] is the type of horror film whose effectiveness arises from its barebones simplicity... And yet, even with the roller coaster turns and the tension that arises from the ephemeral highs and lows of celebrity, the film has frustratingly little to say about internet popularity outside of the basic premise.

The main complaint here is that the elements are in place for “Talk to Me” to be truly creepy, shocking and mind-bending — it’s just a disappointment they’re not quite smartly executed enough to be all that, as opposed to merely entertaining. As recent mainstream-ish horror entries go, that result is still a cut above average.

This story of foolhardy youth and the hell it can unwittingly unleash is a staple of genre cinema, but first time directors Danny and Michael Philippou tell it well and there’s certainly plenty of atmosphere (and effects) to appeal to hardened horror fans.
