This blend of James Bond-style adventure and Jacques Cousteau-style underwater discovery is beautifully photographed, thematically explosive and often surprisingly funny.

The movie is full of information and agitation, but it’s most alive in the wordlessly emotive moments.

This has been the summer of the food docu-thriller. . . . “The Cove’’ is a thriller in a classical sense. It’s the first of these movies to tell a story with more than stock footage and on-camera interviews. It also smartly refracts a major ethical, ecological problem through the prism of guerrilla events. 

Those faint of heart (and under 14) probably should not see The Cove. But everybody else should. Apart from The Hurt Locker, you won't see a better thriller this year.

Beneath the silver-fox exterior beats a rabble-rousing heart. (“You try to do the story legally,” he insists, eyes twinkling in remembrance of every cloak-and-dagger move.) That heart invigorates every frame of “The Cove,” as does Mr. Psihoyos’s eye for a powerful image (his photographs have graced many an issue of National Geographic) and savvy narrative style.

A benign feat of manipulation designed to make you rue every minute you spent ooh-ing and aah-ing at SeaWorld.
