LA MALÉDICTION

Richard Donner États-Unis, 1976
The Perpetual Present
The movie's biggest drawback today is that it feels light; its strongest impression is that, eight years and six Black Sabbath albums after Rosemary's Baby, fictionally giving birth to the Antichrist had gone from a queasy metaphor to a fun hobby. So I wish it did more with the themes it touches on but leaves largely unexplored: the psychodrama of being locked in a battle with your own offspring, and the sneaking suspicion that 1976 looked pretty close to Armageddon already.

The spookiest set piece is the first... The scene shows off all of the film's best features at once: director Richard Donner's command of slow-burning suspense punctuated by shock; cinematographer Gilbert Taylor's deluxe color palette; and, above all, the burbling, brilliant musical score by Jerry Goldsmith, who was hired late in the production process but whose work ranks among the all-time great horror soundtracks.
