Henry James’s classic 1898 ghost story The Turn of the Screw is splodged with unsubtlety in this jump-scary new screen version, wasting a lot of acting talent.

The kids are alright. Their energy is at times surprising. The movie’s buffet of jump scares, by contrast, are mostly the opposite: dull, rushed, and unsurprising—a shame, given the genre.

The Turning so consistently trashes James’s psychological terror, it should have been called The Screwing.

It’s the movie’s open-endedness and literary vestiges that sit uneasily with its repetitive goosings, which manifest in exceedingly familiar ways.
