SAUVAGE

Nicolette Krebitz Allemagne, 2016
The feint of heart or easily offended will shy away from this bold, daring and at times downright disturbing piece of cinema but its bravery – in both direction and performance – should be applauded. Stangenberg is a genuine force of nature, in every sense of the term, and Krebitz’s direction demonstrates a commendable fearlessness of vision.

It is shot beautifully; it is consistently humane, all the way to its ending; and it is perversely, confusingly, uncomfortably erotic, in the very weirdest way. It brings forward convicting arguments about the standards with which women are held to in society...

Stangenberg is uncompromising in her performance as Ania, and at times the admirable message of writer-director Nicolette Krebitz – that women should be free to liberate themselves from social constructs of femininity and, indeed, society itself – comes through

The film presents a mix of the genuine, the comedic and the erotic that makes it weird, but not ineffective, as these different elements all hang together rather well. Wild is, however, let down by its pacing, which detracts a little from Ania’s otherwise compelling transition.

The phrase 'brave performance' is vastly overused but there's no doubt Stangenberg puts herself at some risk here with her animal co-stars... There is no trace of fear in her performance - nor in Krebitz's take-no-prisoners approach to the material.

Galvanized by Lilith Stangenberg’s high-risk performance as a young office drone lured inexorably from notional civilization following a chance encounter of the lupine kind, Krebitz’s film questions the behavioral standards we take as given with quiet daring and disquieting sangfroid.

The first hour lets Ania’s character breathe – Stangenberg is a compelling presence – but the pace also frustrates, and means when the real meat of the plot gets going, the conclusion seems a rushed let-down. As a 30-minute short film, this would have been outstanding, but stretched out to 97 minutes, the film’s intensity is sullied.

Apart from the hugely impressive work by the animal trainers, the most striking aspect of Wild is how Ania’s relationship with the big bad wolf seems to liberate her from bourgeois convention and unleashes a hungry sexuality within her... Anna’s sweet liberation and the very weird way in which it is achieved marks Wild as a disturbing and uncompromising work.

[Stangenberg has] specifically great guts and daring, and not becoming self-conscious or histrionic while laying everything on the line physically. Hollywood actors who imagine they’re bold when they step out of their comfort zones would be humbled and chastened by what they see here.
