The Valeureux are a clan of modest and colorful Jews living in Cephalonia, in the Ionian Islands in the 1930s. Mangeclous is the manipulator and profiteer of the clan, claiming himself a lawyer but is hardly a public writer. The clan is attracted to Geneva by the promise of a treasure.
