A world-class neurotic, Robert can’t stop thinking about Mary—especially after he breaks up with her. Obsessed with the beautiful bank exec, he repeatedly wins her back, and them immediately loses her again. Even as Robert and Mary head for another breakup, there’s still hope for them yet.

Depictions of separation are all too brief in the romcom genre, but not in this sparkling comedy masterpiece. Albert Brooks, the great actor-turned-cult-director (who starred in Taxi Driver) investigates the breakup as a site of great pain, sadness, and humor, realized in terrific one-liners.
