A refreshingly rich and intelligent female-led drama. It’s also a poignant character study that draws first-rate performances from its cast. If Mills intended to make a film about his own youth, the result is a story about the lives of women, the challenges of parenthood, the value of art and a recent past that now seems unreachable.

In the rollout of Oscar contenders at the end of 2016, the unsung hero was 20th Century Women. Or should I say heroine, since a captivating Annette Bening is the beating heart at the centre of this gloriously unclassifiable movie by Mike Mills… Although Bening reigns supreme, Mills zigzags through time and his characters’ lives with a messy amplitude that is downright (dare I say it?) Renoiresque. Everyone has his reasons, everyone has her say.

Sentimental on paper, 20th Century Women’s central conceit is executed with grace and wit. The characters orbit each other at just the right moment, influencing and shattering preconceptions about identity, personality and desire. The young vigorously break free of the bubble, while the old continue to subvert from within. That’s life, a constant renovation.

  • Jason's rating of the film 20th Century Women

20TH CENTURY WOMEN seems to want to sustainedly tap the profound. It has some things to say about life. Life in a particular place and time w/ specific intergenerational dynamics relevant thereto. Not altogether facile. However, in its striving, the film also liberally spatters itself w/ schmaltz. And I cannot remember any recent movie that takes itself so seriously feeling so consummately like packaged product.

  • Z's rating of the film 20th Century Women

Annette Bening is wonderful and amazing in this lovely film. What a confident, passionate, compassionate ode to caring, highly intelligent and unconventional moms. This film moved me quite a bit. The majority of films that come out now are corporate products designed by a marketing team for maximum demographic appeal. This is obviously a highly personal film ripped from the artist's heart and soul. How refreshing.

  • Bilouaustria's rating of the film 20th Century Women

It starts quite badly : arty and self-indulgent. But once you get through this artificiality that can be annoying, Mike Mills has actually much to offer. Great actors, some good lines (once again sometimes self-conscious) and an autobiographical view on the end of the 1970's through three generations. Mills would profit to be simpler, more direct : it almost disturbed me how much he wants to please everyone.

  • Andhika Eka Buana's rating of the film 20th Century Women

20th CENTURY WOMEN might not be my most favorite film from last year (tough competition! 2016 was indeed a wonderful year for cinema), but damn it was the film with the highest play:pause-and-took-snapshot ratio; be it because of the gorgeous 80's suburban LA imagery, quotable OMSsoture dialogues, or Greta Gerwig/Elle Fanning/Annette Benning doing things.

  • ig_____or's rating of the film 20th Century Women

I almost cried for three times! This film is a roller-coaster of emotions: it's happy and sad and, most important, smart. It paints a feminist portrait of different generations of women without being silly or stuck up. Elle Fanning, Greta Gerwig and Queen Annette Bening (who is long overdue for a Best Actress Oscar) were all fantastic!

  • OFF_FRAME's rating of the film 20th Century Women

Enjoyable, engaging and entertaining. For a title about 20th Century Women it's oddly male-centric and lacking in racial diversity. The film is full of feminist quotes, is told tenderly, renders the emerging punk and skateboarding scenes genuinely and feels like a very personal yet universal story of adaptation and coming of age(s). The characters all have their flaws and wonderful redeeming points. 3.5 stars

  • HenriqueA's rating of the film 20th Century Women

I had read the (wonderful) script before watching the film and was somewhat disappointed by the editing and by some of the most powerful moments on page that didn't translate that well to screen. But still, it was pretty fucking grand. Mills' stories really engage me and he creates atmospheres I wished I could live in. I wish I lived in this film. And Anette Bening is nothing short of fantastic.

  • msmichel's rating of the film 20th Century Women

Mike Mills' latest far outshines the promise he showed with 'Thumbsucker' and 'Beginners' with this exceptionally well scripted take on motherhood, community and identity both female and male. Performances across the board are quite extraordinary especially the trio of actresses showcasing women of three separate age groups. Bening may have the heaviest lifting here but Gerwig and Fanning both impress here as well.
