Mercuriales Disutradarai oleh Virgil Vernier
One of my favorite films at the ND/NF this year, Virgil Vernier’s Mercuriales (2014), is a metaphysical, bloodless, vampiric tale, perfectly suited to our soulless capitalist age… Vernier does a splendid job of recasting Paris as a place of new, confused cultural and geographical markers, reimagining his city through the eyes of his estranged protagonists.

By extracting rich, strange metaphor from the circumscribed territory of the French suburbs, Vernier creates an inexhaustibly layered portrait of contemporary life and elevates his film to a cosmic level.

Mysterious and soulful, Virgil Vernier’s debut fiction feature has its eyes on the night skies and its feet firmly planted on concrete… The film’s full of hard-to-assimilate details, not to mention a raucous analog electronic score by James Ferraro that’s like Tangerine Dream led by John Bonham. All create a sense of primal emotions, seething under drab contemporary surfaces, that have yet to find expression.

Apa kata orang-orang?

  • harniman.gerald's rating of the film Mercuriales

Mundane life of modern urban cities, pointless jobs, barren landscapes of concrete, searches for relevance without hope. Dysfunctional society working in a world devoid of meaning, ultimately destroying what is secure to provide unattainable goals, rushing to repeat what has already become obsolete.

  • David Davidson's rating of the film Mercuriales

This was fascinating. Mercuriales has a haunting mood that threads the thin line between fairy tale and nightmare as it explores the diverse young lives in France's countryside. Closer to early Claire Denis than to Pedro Costa (but still has a bit of both). Vernier has the promise to be one of France's exciting new directors, up there with Gonzalez and Mandico. Excited to discover the newer one. Thanks Mubi!

  • saitosouta's rating of the film Mercuriales

Vernier takes an interesting approach which has completely different style in time and space with pretentious music in 80's cheap horror, two girls prowling around Europe (shades of Rivette), social critique like terror of terrorism (twin buildings' definitely 9.11 motive)/ immigration / prejudice against religion. I thought of "History of Fear" & "Neighboring Sounds". Invisible war spreads all over the world.

  • Bilouaustria's rating of the film Mercuriales

Vernier is gifted and know how to create a strange atmosphere without much effects. His style is almost documentary-like and his actors tend to be natural but what is so singular is the mix of contemporary topics he brings to the table : security, religion, violence, sex, all mashed into our everyday nothingness. And it gives you the feeling that he elevates all this in some kind of mysticism or new age philosophy.

  • dionysus67's rating of the film Mercuriales

A refreshing look at variious aspects of youth in a film of some potential (mainly the naturalist acting and some colorful shots). Yet, Vernier attempts to do too much with too few resources. Thus, the film is meant to cover aspects of femininity, deviance, limited opportunity structure, racial and cultural pluralism, securitization and even a 'decline of the West' critique. This makes it muddled and half-hearted.

  • Michael H. CLAES's rating of the film Mercuriales

Faiblesses au montage et au scénario, mais l'interprétation bouleversante de Ana NEBORAC & Philippine STINDEL illumine ce désespérant néant des banlieues. === Weaknesses in the editing and the scenario, but the moving interpretation of Ana NEBORAC & Philippine STINDEL illuminates this hopeless nothingness of the suburbs.

  • josé neves's rating of the film Mercuriales

"Indie" cinema # 6: the composition. From real(ity) elements, it's inscribed a cinematographic mythology diluted by a composite structure that equals every component, differentiating it: science fiction, realism, fantastic - according to Rivette - and the socio-economic critique are joined in a film that unveils it transfiguring them, forming a unique organic texture. Scientific realism, "fictions du réel".

  • msmichel's rating of the film Mercuriales

Excellent feature from director Virgil Vernier melding a bold aesthetic with strong performances and a fragmented but fascinating script. Well worth seeking out.
