France is one of the greatest nations for cinema, and has led the art form ever since Dryer’s Passion of Joan of Arc, through the poetic realism of Renoir and Carné, to the auteur theory of Bázin, and finally to the Nouvelle Vague in the 1960’s that revolutionized the way cinema was created. The best French films are extremely important to cinema’s history. I haven’t seen every French film made, but here is a list of the best of what I’ve seen.
