Enlightening essayists, discursive diarists, analytical alchemists, meandering musers, philosophical prestidigitators, curious commentators and curators of curiosities, travelogue terpsichoreans, illuminating intellectual film-makers who have gone beyond the borders of narrative film and visual exploration to inform, surprise and beguile us with their thoughts….
Cinema is considered a visual medium, but I think we could do with hearing directly intelligent film-makers’ voices more; pondering minds that are open, receptive, erudite; personal testaments, cinema of ideas cogently and imaginatively expressed. There are plenty, but still often on the margins not the multiplexes, and not very often discussed on these boards. (Some cultures distrust and even disparage intellectuals!) It’s an area of film-making I could do with getting more familiar with myself.. I include here Four Women of Egypt, in which the film maker allows the protagonists to express their thoughts, while adding her own touches.
