The 1909 experiments of independent film pioneers mark the beginning of the Lithuanian animation. The first animators had innovative ideas and various techniques. Mostly self-taught, working with a team of enthusiasts they interpreted film making via their own personal experience. In the beginning of the Soviet era, amateur Lithuanian animation was replaced with a more professional approach and a new generation of animators emerged. Some filmmakers graduated from various Russian film schools, others attended animators’ courses in Lithuania. The main themes of their work range from mythological and fairytale-like animation through philosophical and psychological to social themes, often designated of younger audiences. These animation films were usually produced using a classical hand draw technique, though not exclusively. Since the beginning of Lithuanian animation, there is at least one significant amateur animator with an outstanding film style. The collapse of the USSR resulted in a cut of funding from Moscow. As a result classical animation encountered great difficulties. Fewer animations were produced and the quality suffered. Filmmakers started looking for cheaper, more diverse film techniques.
