(I was hoping to keep this list down to six films, but I keep thinking of ones I’ve missed.) I like to catch these whenever they’re on, and don’t like to go too long before I watch them again. ‘Unrespectable’ is a little unkind, but each of them has flaws of one kind or another, which in many of the cases just makes me like the film even more. ‘Scaramouche’ and ‘Forbidden Planet’ are as absurd as they are joyous. Apart from being off the charts PC-wise, ‘How to Murder Your Wife’ is a bit uneven. ‘Ice Cold in Alex’ is longer than it needs to be (as well as being derivative of ‘The Wages of Fear’). ‘The Time Machine’ and ‘The Spy in Black’… Read more

Apart from being off the charts PC-wise, ‘How to Murder Your Wife’ is a bit uneven. ‘Ice Cold in Alex’ is longer than it needs to be (as well as being derivative of ‘The Wages of Fear’). ‘The Time Machine’ and ‘The Spy in Black’ suffer a little obviously from their budgetary constraints. ‘Deep End’ and ‘La Sentinelle’ are structurally suspect. ‘Local Hero’ perhaps has ideas above its station. I think ‘Crossing Delancey’ appeals because, despite clearly belonging to the genre of ‘New York Jewish rom-com’, it’s rarely overtly funny nor even that romantic.
