Music and film collide.
Arranged chronologically and then alphabetically for each year.
NOTE: the list is a work in progress. However, progress is hampered by the fact that MUBI does not accept music videos (i.e. promotional films) as a genre of film. I have had the following submissions rejected:
Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Relax [video #1]
R.E.M., It’s the End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine)
Madonna, Like a Virgin
so I have not submitted any more music videos that I would like to include in this list, meaning I cannot add the following:
first sound Song Car-Tune: Come Take a Trip on My Airship (1924)
last sound Song Car-Tune: By the Light of the Silvery Moon (1927)
Louis Jordan shorts (1940s)
Tony Bennett, “Stranger in Paradise” (1956)
“Dáme si do bytu” (“Let’s get to the apartment”) (1958, d. Ladislav Rychman)
Scopitone Cinebox (1958-1978)
‘No eye has ever heard, no ear has ever seen, no hand has tasted, or tongue felt, or heart described what my dream was like’ – Bottom in William Shakespeare, ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ (1595/96), act 4, scene 1.
‘If I had to choose between losing my sight or hearing – I would keep my hearing. I can’t imagine anything more horrible than to have my music taken away from me’. Ingmar Bergman.
Musicals. To be clearer I have not included musicals that are a film with songs in it (Singin’ In the Rain), but have included musicals that are a film about music with songs in it (?).
