The film is an onslaught, sometimes silly, sometimes profound, but always riveting and emotional, and dazzlingly sure of itself.

At times, including in the bloody opener, Corbet seems to be following the lead of the art-film auteur Michael Haneke, whose explorations of mediated violence can skew sadistic. By the time “Vox Lux” ends, it’s clear that Corbet has his own ideas; he’s still finding his way but, at 30, he is already a dynamic filmmaker.

Apa yang orang lain katakan?

  • Not A Sexy Vampire's rating of the film Vox Lux

Not sure what to make of this. Is it anti-pop (like A Star Is Born) or not? It definitely displays an ambivalence about pop, the media and the cult of celebrity worship but the songs are actually pretty great ('Wrapped Up' especially). It's never less than engrossing and entertaining, with great performances by Portman, Martin and Cassidy. Need to think about this more, but I have a feeling I might love this soon.

  • Duarte Ferreira's rating of the film Vox Lux

The film perfectly encapsulates the best and worst pop music bring into the world, incorporating these elements into its very fabric, with a fully nuanced initial half doing a complete one-eighty into the second one, where the shallowness that comes with stardom riddles the screen with its tantalizing sneer. It's a tour-de-force by everyone involved; bloated, over-the-top, but never anything less that captivating.

  • Dan's rating of the film Vox Lux

Brady Corbet is the most exciting American director atm and all the things he made Natalie Portman do were astonishing. That horrific final concert, the dancing... I'm constantly astounded by this century and this will serve as a record of the Mileys, Keshas, Britneys and all the other very white pop stars who attain dizzying levels of success that make little sense to a lot of people.

  • smndvdcl's rating of the film Vox Lux

Brady Corbet’s school of thought as a director is exactly what indie cinema needs. Yes, his influences are recognisable but his style remains singular and compelling. A bitter taste to match ‘The Favourite’, this is the year of the hard pill to swallow, which is entirely appropriate and prescient for such dystopian times.

  • OLIVER-J's rating of the film Vox Lux

exciting filmmaking from Brady Cobert, he's not afraid to take risks narratively or stylistically and for me it all worked. I've still been thinking of this one now a week after watching it. the opening is excellent, even knowing what was going to happen I found it very tense. Portman is quite excellent, as are Jude Law and Raffey Cassidy but the real stars for me are Corbet and DP Lol Crawley.

  • Ethan's rating of the film Vox Lux

Natalie Portman gives an incredible performance in this unique films that has a lot to say about the last twenty years in this country and is a true abstract vision that clearly comes together to paint a stark portrait of the world we live in even if it is told through the eyes of a delusional pop star. It may be slow in parts but there are some great moments here and overall a good flow.

  • Robert John Torres's rating of the film Vox Lux

A brazen, black-hearted vortex that is as formally involving as it is thematically repellent. This is extroverted, bravura filmmaking with a sharp eye for vibrant visuals and an ear fine-tuned to aural transcendence--resulting in a singularly thrilling viewing experience. The protagonist as written is a soured, provocative creation headlong beyond the realm of realism. It's not perfect, but fuck off--it's dazzling.

  • HKFanatic's rating of the film Vox Lux

Pop Idolatry. Here, so many of the elements that intrigued but failed to coalesce in "The Childhood of a Leader" - the novelistic structure, overwhelming soundtrack, an obsession with the formative years of a public figure - come together to create a portrait that is beautiful, imperfect, and singularly of our present moment in time. Brady Corbet has worked with the greats and is now on his way to becoming one.
